CentOS, the free and open-source Linux distribution platform, is undergoing some significant changes and it is crucial that all Linux users that rely on it take note.
The current version of CentOS is CentOS 8, a version that has been built as a replica of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8. CentOS has traditionally followed the same ten-year support lifecycle as RHEL itself, which should have given CentOS 8 an end-of-life date in 2029.
However, CentOS is changing. As per the December announcement, CentOS will no longer be a rebuild distro that is binary-compatible with Red Hat Linux. Instead, CentOS has moved to CentOS Stream, an upstream, public development branch for RHEL.
The announcement means that CentOS 8 reached End of Life on December 31st 2021, and in January 2022 CentOS also discounted their Linux 8 zero-day support.
As an aside, CentOS 7 will still be supported alongside RHEL 7, through to 2024.
Critically, CentOS Stream is not a direct replacement for CentOS, as it will become the ‘upstream development platform’ for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, so what distro will you be using?
