Data Archiving

Our Service

Data Archiving is one of WellData’s many database services. Our database developers support the IT sector with end of data lifecycle management.

Firstly, the project manager plans how to move data which is no longer actively used. As a result, an organised data archive forms from the ageing data. Meanwhile, reducing pressure on your live environment and consumption of primary storage space. And, this maximises performance. But, the secondary data sets remain fully accessible. Data archiving also meets regulations such as General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Especially if, undoubtedly, ageing data must be kept for long retention periods.

WellData are also able to provide data indexing. So, you can retrieve specific records from a single point quickly. Although, we first consider the speed and efficiency of the archiving process. WellData’s team of consultants have broad knowledge and experience. They have worked with many systems. And, as a result, they can recommend a secondary storage solution. In addition, as part of a database managed service, we can provide ongoing support.

The Process

When you get in touch, we kick start the process immediately. We offer data archiving as part of bespoke, project services. WellData are on a mission to provide a data archiving process which is scalable and durable. So, the archiving process is suitable even if databases grow.

The data archiving project has 4 stages. You may also opt for us to provide ongoing support and advice.

  • Initial Consultation
  • Project Planning
  • Review
  • Application

Consultation

An initial consultation explores your archive requirements. This is to confirm your business’ needs. We take a deeper dive into your business goals and day-to-day operations to inform the plan for your data archiving strategy. We can also provide infrastructure suggestions. Once we are confident with the project, we provide a quote with a clear breakdown of the process.

Strategy Planning, Review and Implementation

WellData now knows your software and storage needs. We create a data archival policy which can be met using an automated solution. This will result in bespoke deployment options and built using best practice. You will receive the data archiving plan for a final review before installation. Next, we also suggest the best partner for your archival data storage, if required.

Additional: Database Management and Support

You can discuss an ongoing database managed service with the database consultant. The added service provides 24/7/365 support to fill the gap of an internal DBA. And, we will check the health of your databases. This supports data lifecycle management.

The Benefits Of Data Archiving

Undeniably, data archiving has many benefits. Companies which handle data in any amount should have a procedure. Key benefits include:

  • Reduce Primary Storage Consumption. Moving older data to your data archive creates storage for existing data.
  • Restore Performance of the database environment to prevent disaster recovery.
  • Prevent Data Loss. And, create a separate area for historical data. Avoid confusing the archive with your data backup.
  • Ensure Regulatory Compliance. Use automation for time maintaining and data integrity.
  • Create Cost Effective Primary Storage. Reduce reliance on data archiving software and machine learning. Choose a low cost archive storage and use WellData's expertise.
  • De-Duplicate Data. Improve data integrity with a data archiving solution which checks for repeat information. Duplicate data can affect how much data storage you need. And, it can potentially slow down current queries.
  • Increase Security. Restore integrity of sensitive information. Archives serve as a protective location for financial data and a long term retention policy.

FAQs

What is data archiving?

Data archiving is moving ageing data where the data is no longer actively used. Besides, you can continue to retrieve data from secondary storage mediums. The process is done to copy data out of a live database. It is then moved into a separate data archive. What’s more, the archive can be put on the same server, or separately from the original source. By all means, use your preferred solution to store data. Yet, these are usually on-premise solutions, flash storage or cloud storage.

A data archiving plan means moving infrequently accessed data to a library. And, the archive typically features search functionality and indexes. Certainly, you may delete archival data. You can also store the data if you have long term retention policies.

Now, your retention policy is understood and the system is set up. It will delete data at a specified period of time, if required. Or, as it meets your rules. Moreover, moving data is a best practice of data lifecycle management. At the same time, it is beneficial to compliance.

Evidently, the archival process reduces primary data storage consumption and associated storage costs. Plus, data archiving solutions provide many other benefits.

Does archiving data save space?

Storage administrators can save space in primary systems. To do so, you move data to a low cost archive storage. This creates free space in the primary storage.

Should archived data be treated the same as live data?

You should treat data archives with data governance. Keep data integrity and meet compliance. It is important to know that data archives are not exempt from General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). Hence, you may wish to seek advice from a database consultant.

What is meant by data retrieval?

Data archiving removes data. Where as, data retrieval reverses the exercise. E.g. accidentally data archiving important information. E.g. you need historical data for reporting. To do so, set up an application. Or, such software that can access database including reports. This will reference the data archive. Meanwhile, a web-based interface can restore the data from cloud storage.
